Syrah

Syrah is without doubt one of the world’s greatest grape varieties and expresses itself best in France in the Rhône Valley in areas like Côte Rôtie and Hermitage. It also grows well in many other parts of France and all over the world. The wines can range in style from deep, dense and full bodied to light, spicy and elegant depending on where it is grown and how it is made. It is a very versatile grape! In Australia Syrah is know as Shiraz and makes big, alcoholic wine with hugely concentrated flavours. The epitome of this has to be the Iconic Penfolds Grange which is well worth trying if you can find it and have a couple of hundred Euros to spare!

Languedoc-Roussillon

The Langudoc-Roussillon area is one of the biggest wine producing areas in France. The quality here varies enormously from bog-standard varietals at bargin basement prices to high quality AOP wines at sometime surprising good value prices. Key AOPs include Minervois, Corbières and Picpoul de Pinet. The climate down here is hot so to get any kind of finesse in the wines you need to grow at altitude. The air is cooler at higher altitudes and there is a greater difference between the daytime and the nighttime temperatures which help to retain acidity in the grapes.

An Early Riser

Even though this wine is from the Languedoc which is know for it’s warm climate and big, beefy wines this particular Syrah is all about freshness. It is picked in the morning whist the grapes are still fresh and vinified at a cool temperature to maintain the freshness of the fruit. The wine is macerated for a very short time so as to extract only the fruit flavours and not the tannins. The short maceration time also means the wine is light coloured as the deep colour of a red wine comes from prolonged contact with the skins. The winemaker here does not add any sulphur to the wine and the wine stays in the fermentation vessel until it is bottled without seeing any oak. The result is a pure expression of Syrah without any influence from oak, sulphur or other factors and it is absolutely delicious.

Grilled meats and roasted vegeatable

This is a fruit forward slighly lighter Syrah. Try serving slighly chilled (about 13-14 °C) to keep it fresh and accentuate the fruit rather than warmth or weight. Pair it will grilled or roasted food as the slight char will pair nicely with the fruitiness and slight peppery edge. Grilled pork chops with charred peppers and rosemary would be a good choice.

Can you tell this wine is a fresh Syrah, even though its made in a hot climate?

  • Yes, the wine maker's early rising was worth it!

  • It's still a bit heavy for me. Needed to get up even earier!
